Walk to the north, past the Internet computer terminals. On the left, there is a wooden statue of Minerva, the Greek Goddess of knowledge, known as "The Maiden". James Nation carved "The Maiden" from basswood. One of his sons, Dr. John Nation had settled here earlier in 1847 and James Nation moved to Uxbridge when he retired. "The Maiden" is one of two remaining pieces of work from the several that Nation completed. James Nation died on March 22nd, 1877. In 1912, Dr. John Nation donated the statue to the library. It was refurbished by Ian Woods in August 1995.
